A home steeped in history and personality, Golowin House was originally built for Mr W. Golowin and his family; a Russian/Jewish family who immigrated to Australia. Built by his building company, the Golowin Bros, they were known as a quality builder and interestingly, Iwanoff’s preferred builder. Big on entertaining, the Golowin’s were known for hosting theatrical and musical events at the house, and the third bedroom was known for playing cards and housed the wine cellar.

Designed with an emphasis on open planning, Iwanoff’s idea was to connect the indoors with outside, by using large areas of glass and maximizing the use of natural light and cross flow ventilation. Full use of natural materials were important in the design, and these included Wandoo and Blackbutt timber, large-scale granite, burnished copper and concrete.

The elevation of Golowin House with its single long run roofline provides a contemporary yet understated frontage to South View Road. The house is connected to the street via a bridge which overlooks a feature pond. An individually designed letterbox sits in the forefront; a signature design trait of Iwanoff. Turning the corner onto Woodroyd Street, one witnesses a more dramatic elevation.
