A prestigious house hidden in a 1651m2 land, Circa 1916

Goodwood is an English Tudor style house with finely crafted details inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement, hidden in a British Colonial style garden in a block of 1651 square metres. It was designed by the father-and-son architectural firm of Arthur and Hugh Peck and was completed in 1920. The house still retains original timber doors, beams, balustrades and other features celebrating the beauty of crafted materials. The first occupant of the house was John Alexander, a wealthy entrepreneur at that time.
Goodwood preserves all classic architecture features of the time. It is a large triple-brick house with a prominent attic storey, enclosed by a terracotta tiled gabled roof with a plain roughcast rendered chimney. The gable ends are clad with stained shingles at the apex, with half-timbering and roughcast below. There is a row of timber framed windows at the first floor level, and dormer windows along the slope of the roof. The ground level walls are red brick to sill height, then roughcast rendered above. The enclosed porches at the front corner and the back of the house have round arched openings, in the typical British Colonial style. There is also a curved bay window along each of the two street elevations. This English style manor offers 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, study overlooking the garden, library, updated kitchen and massive billiard room. An abundance of period detail including lead lights, box seats, open fireplaces with original tiles and grates, timber lined entrance, high decorative ceilings (4metres) and more. Ducted heating/cooling and security alarm system are modern comforts that add to this classic residence. A statue of Ludwig van Beethoven enhances the art atmosphere of the house.
Significantly setback from roads, the house occupies a huge site that is densely landscaped. The planting includes a huge English elm and palm tree probably from the construction of the house, as well as a mature bay laurel, golden ash, Mediterranean cedar, eucalypts and other trees. The western side of the site facing Pembroke St is the entrance of the property, comprising a pair of original wrought iron gates (now electrified) supported by large steel piers with a side gate, and on the right side of the gate it is marked the name of the house. In the land facing Canterbury Rd, the house is setback largely, which has potential to do subdivision while keeping the heritage house (STCA).
