It's known affectionately by Bruny Islanders as The Dolls House - but its real name is Christopher Lumsden's Cottage. Built in 1902 for the island's Anglican minister, this lovely house has been recently renovated with meticulous attention to detail by its owners Nick and Leonie, who own and operate the adjacent Bruny Island Cheese and Beer Company, an essential and popular stop on the Bruny Island food and wine route.
The house is an appealing blend of style, history and character.
The ground floor has a bright, sunny and modern kitchen, and an attractive open living/dining area with polished hardwood floors and French doors to the lower veranda, which extends from the front to the northern side and around to the rear, where it joins an open timber deck. Also on this level is a reading/games room, the contemporary bathroom and separate laundry. From the reading room, timber stairs ascend to the upper level.
Upstairs, two of the three bedrooms open through French doors to the upper veranda, which wraps around from the front to the sunny northern side of the house. The third bedroom on this level has a dormer window looking out to the hills behind Great Bay.
The rear veranda and deck have an outlook into a sheltered and private garden, with a children's playhouse and space for a vegetable patch. There is plenty of rainwater storage, a pressure system and a septic tank.
Christopher Lumsden's Cottage has recently been successfully operated as short-term accommodation, returning a good income. With outstanding cheese, craft beer, wood-oven bread and great coffee on the doorstep, it's no wonder that visitors who come to stay love the convenient location. Local honey and oysters are also available just along the road, the ferry is only 15 minutes away on a good sealed road and the beach at Great Bay is a couple of minute's walk.
